Why local search decides who gets the call

Someone looking for a dentist, attorney or contractor in Wilmington may compare business listings, reviews and service pages before contacting anyone. Search layouts vary, and being visible does not guarantee being chosen.

Google describes local results in terms of relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot control where someone searches from. You can keep your details accurate and explain clearly what your business does.

Piece one: your Google Business Profile

Choose the category that best describes your business, keep hours current and add real photographs. A practice or firm with a customer-facing office and a contractor that visits customers have different location arrangements. Follow the profile rules that match your actual operation.

Describe the areas you genuinely serve. Do not imply an office exists in every town you mention. Check your phone number, website and next-step links from a customer’s perspective.

Piece two: consistent local citations

Review the directories relevant to your business and remove outdated contact details. Healthcare, legal and home-service directories serve different audiences. Choose relevant listings rather than submitting to every directory you can find.

Your name, phone number and website should be accurate wherever they appear. Keep public location details consistent with the way the business actually operates.

Piece three: honest reviews

Invite genuine feedback without incentives or selectively asking only people you expect to praise you. Google prohibits fake engagement and incentivized reviews. Follow the policies of each platform you use.

Reply to reviews calmly and in general terms. Healthcare practices should never confirm someone is a patient or mention treatment details in a public reply; invite concerns to a private channel and check your approach with your compliance advisor.

Piece four: genuinely local keywords

A service page should answer the question behind the search. A dental consultation, a legal intake request and an HVAC service visit need different explanations of what happens next.

Include real local details when useful: service areas, office access or scheduling restrictions. Do not copy the same page across towns with only the place name changed. Add area pages only when you have distinct, useful information to offer.

How to know it's working

Review available profile interactions alongside the inquiries your team receives. Keep suitable inquiries, bookings and completed business separate. A ranking change alone cannot tell you whether the business benefited.

Before adding promotion, check whether someone who finds you can understand your service, reach the right person and receive a clear next step.
